New Amsterdam was a Dutch colony built in the tip of Manhattan Island at the beginning of the 17th century. Managed by the Dutch West India Comapny for trade in fur and other goods, the colony at first seemed destined to failure. It took the appointment of a new director general, Peter Stuyvesant, to take hold. Not long after this, in 1664, the colony was captured by the British to create a chain of colonies down the American east coast. The colony was renamed "New York" in honor of James, Duke of York, who had been promised the colony as a present.
